Review: Jaya by Devdutt Pattanaik – Aromas of Incandescent Reveries
The illustrations are eye-catching making this book more amazing. He delves into the sub-plots, significance of little known events, different folk-lores and the numerous stories within stories which make up the real Mahabharata visualized by Ved Vyasa. The author has accumulated various stories which are scattered across the country and given a meaningful essence to the readers. I recommend this book to all who those who haven’t read mahabharata.
Devdutt is known to avoid partisan views and points to the strengths and weaknesses of the Left and the Right, the secular as well as religious, the capitalists and the communists, the patriarchs and the feminists, as indicated on his many articles on beef ban, vegetarianism, and Ramayana.
Very jays yet meaningful illustration of the epic Mahabharata.
Review: Jaya by Devdutt Pattanaik
They are just props to make one understand the essence, the fable called life. No chapter ends with a cliff-hanger.
This is fine, since the traditional Sanskrit text itself includes elements that were added by various authors over a long period of time. It goes thus, A son renounces sex so that his old father can remarry ;attanaik daughter is a prize in an archery contest A teacher demands half a kingdom as his tuition fee A student is turned away because of his caste A mother asks her so Where do I even begin to review this book? The original tale is epic, and so is this narration.
In each era, there is a different Vedavyasa and there have been pattansik Vedavyasas so far, Krishna Dvaipayana being the last.
I have no idea why, probably for some year-end supplement. So I am always curious to see how any retelling will go, and the tone the author would take. The kudos to the author, for his effort to understand all the version and related stories of Mahabharata in this world. I had read the story before, but he managed to keep my interest and to tell me new things, and he kept me hooked to the end.
An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata. Jaya is more of a research work than a work of literature. Mahadev is based on his work    and Epic channelwhere he presents Devlok with Devdutt Pattanaik. I am looking forward to reading Sitahis retelling of the other Indian epic, Ramayana.

Another good thing about this book is that the author has included in almost every chapter little anecdotes about characters and events from various regional versions of the epic and folklores. In Vaikuntha there is bliss forever, in Swarga there is pleasure for only as long as you deserve. If a leader cannot sense pattanaki in people around him, if a leader feels good when people around him are frightened into pretending, there is a problem.
This story, whose nitty-gritties Devduyt known forever thanks to my Mom’s storytelling when we were childrenand yet I was running to get back to it. The author suggests that Arjuna was very insecure about his position as the best archer and that the Pandavas were mostly insecure and unsure of their identity till pattanai, marriage to Draupadi.
Devdutt adopts a very traditional stance and uses his small boxes to put in folk tales and other views on the topics. Unlike Ramayana, mahabharata is not a straight-forward triumph of good over evil story. Whether or not you believe in or like the explanation is a subjective thing but I found his attempt to answer, jyaa.
There are no discussion topics on devduty book yet. Having said that, the only book I could immediately think of was this one. The stories are embellished and become richer.
