Raymond Radiguetborn inwas an author of an amazing precocity. He produced his masterpiece, The Devil in the Fleshbetween the ages of sixteen and eighteen. This publication provoked a scandal, due to cuerpl youth of the protagonists, but mainly due to the lack of respect that had arisen in relation to the valiant combatants of the world conflict still very recent.
The novel seemed to justify Marthe’s adultery, whose husband was beaten he Is there a Radiguet myth as there is a Rimbaud myth? Dixblo novel seemed to justify Marthe’s adultery, whose husband was beaten head-on. But the e, of the young novelist was also recognized. Any vestige of scandal disappeared from contemporary judgments so as not diabli leave a single place of admiration.
We find again in the background of Radiguet’s novel, a novel in a clear and refined style, a social critique of the bourgeoisie, petty bourgeois, at the time.
Conformity, the social base of the inhabitants of the small commune of the Marne bordering much of a small provincial town, are brushed with the cruelty of a seventeen-year-old adolescent.
A novel of analysis, love and adolescence. The First World War broke out. For the narrator, it is the beginning of great holidays.
He meets Marta, a young girl legally married. Marta soon finds herself again, while Jacques, who has become her husband, set out to fight. Between her and the young boy is born a love, total on the part of Marthe, semi-cynical, semi-sincere on the part of the narrator. Although they are rivals, the young man tries to attenuate the unconscious cruelty that Marthe proves in relation to his husband, and to soften the tone of the letters that sends him.

He himself knows rzdiguet much what to think of his love. Will it end, as do many passions, in indifference? Fate will decide differently. Marthe announces to her young lover that she expects a child; a child of him, the adolescent of sixteen years.
To save the respectability of the family, it is allowed to believe the ciablo who is the father of the child to be born. But when Martha dies of the consequences of childbirth, it is still her lover who calls, and no longer her wires that bears the same name. The attentive and deceived husband will remain to the end and persuaded that it is his wife that he liked.
He’ll create more his wires. The Storyteller, taken back by his raymlnd, concludes meaningfully understanding that order, in the long run, puts itself around things. View all 12 comments.
View all 6 comments. I had seen both movie versions of this, both quite sensual, the French one from and the Italian one from the ’80s.
I remember there was quite a stir about the ’80s one because there are explicit scenes of fellatio in it and it was one of the first “legit” Euro films to have X-rated scenes done by a “legit” actress.
The film is quite remarkable for its day, a real advance in showing sex on the screen; it’s also a masterpiece of the cinema, and still quite hard to see, for no good reason I had seen both movie versions of this, both quite sensual, the French one from and the Italian one from the ’80s. But both films seem to make the protagonists older than they are in this book, which are 16 for the boy and 19 for the girl. I had to read this because the kept woman in Kawabata’s novel, “The Lake” mentions this book. So that hooked me.
I just started reading it and so far it’s right up my alley. OK, so a quarter of the way into this and enjoying it. The ole adolescent poetic dreamy boy’s crush on the older woman thingy I have the old edition from which is translated sl Kay Boyle, whereas the new one depicted here is by someone named A.
I suspect the newer one is in a more contemporary style. This old one I’m reading is in a somewhat antiquated style and I like that, it adds to the poetic feel. Totally into this book. Just when you think you’ve heard every profound thing that could be said about love, this one offers some that I hadn’t quite read stated in this way before.
A simple, yet rich sojourn, this. OK, well the book radigueg somewhat abruptly and in a conventional manner, that leaves an easy out for the author, but I can’t dock the book a star for that. I loved reading this too much. View all 4 comments. I remember many years ago seeing an interview with Brian Aldiss in which he was talking about the novel Frankenstein. And I accepted that. But now I know that the best novel ever written by wl teenager is this masterpiece of love, jealousy, thwarted desire and poignant irony, The Devil in the Flesh.
The fact that Radiguet died at the absurdly young age of 20 makes the phenomenon of his talent all the more affecting. His insights in the emotional processes of passionate love are precise, acute, truthful, ironic, paradoxical and often morally unpalatable.

The novel make deep insights in the nature of couples love: Un libro davvero intenso. Lavoro degno di un genio precoce come Radiguet. Thank god I’ve read this as a twenty-five year old and not as a teenager–I have a feeling I would have been so distracted with a burning envy of Radiguet’s precocious prose that my younger self would have missed how deeply felt this radkguet is in its elegant austerity.

This is one of those situations where it is easy to be distracted by the biographical circumstances of the novel–written before the author was eighteen, immediately celebrated by Cocteau and the French literary intelligentsia of his day, dead from typhoid fever at twenty–this fascination is only compounded by the fact the narrative is supposedly autobiographical in nature.
A sexual coming-of-age novel told in the first person, it has the limited dkablo but almost unbearable emotional density raxiguet the adolescent perspective as the protagonist discovers–as if for the first time ever–what it is to love, to diahlo sex, to experience what seems to be the extreme injustice of fate oh, those teenage years But Radiguet consistently sidesteps potential melodramatic pitfalls, and his ruthlessly spare prose gives the narrative a slow-burning quality that unleashes its devastating emotional gravity only with its closing words.
We lay there in silence. This was proof to me of my happiness.
Every great author I read, seems to me like my former self of another generation. Laconic, understated, and pithy, this is a masterpiece. Yukio Mishima, I read, was influenced a lot by this teenagers work.
